You have a long layover in Jakarta or Bali and want to leave the airport between flights. You search for an "Indonesia transit visa" and cannot find one to apply for, and that's because Indonesia does not issue a separate transit visa.
But if you stay inside the airport transit area, you do not need a visa. If you want to leave the transit area, you can apply for the e-VOA if your nationality is eligible. Otherwise, apply for the single-entry tourist visa (C1) before you travel.
Summary
Indonesia has no transit visa category. The Directorate General of Immigration's official visa list does not include one.
You can stay inside the airport transit area without any visa. Check with your airline to confirm that your connection allows you to stay there.
To leave the transit area, apply for the e-VOA (the online B1 Visa on Arrival, which allows you to stay up to 30 days) if your nationality is eligible.
If your nationality is not eligible, apply for the C1 single-entry tourist visa before traveling. It allows a 60-day stay, extendable up to 180 days in total.
Is there an Indonesia transit visa?
No. The official list of Indonesian visas published by the Directorate General of Immigration does not include a transit visa category [imigrasi.go.id].
Instead, certain entry visas already cover transit. The B1 Visa on Arrival lists "transit in Indonesia to travel to another country" among its permitted purposes [imigrasi.go.id]. In practice, the requirements you need for transit through Indonesia depend on the visa you use to enter the country.
Do you need a visa if you stay inside the transit area?
No. If you are connecting between two international flights and stay inside the airport transit area, you can do so without any visa. You only need a visa if you pass through immigration to leave the transit area.
Before you fly, check with your airline how your connection works. Some connections require you to collect checked bags, change terminals or switch to a separate ticket, which may mean passing through immigration. If it does, you will need an e-VOA or a C1 visa, as explained below.
Can you leave the airport on the e-VOA?
Yes, if your nationality is eligible. The e-VOA is the online version of the B1 Visa on Arrival: you apply and pay online, before you travel, on the Indonesia e-visa website, evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Alternatively, you can also obtain the B1 Visa on Arrival at the airport counter [imigrasi.go.id].
However, not all nationalities are eligible. The official eVisa website publishes the list of countries whose citizens can apply for the e-VOA [evisa.imigrasi.go.id]. Check whether your country is on the list before booking your trip, and check again close to your travel date, as the list may change.
According to the official B1 page:
Permitted purposes: tourism, visiting family, attending meetings, incentive trips (travel that rewards employees or business partners for their performance), conventions and exhibitions, and transit to another country.
Length of stay: up to 30 days from arrival, extendable once to 60 days in total.
Validity: 90 days from the date of issue. This validity is separate from the 30-day stay.
Documents required for the e-VOA:
A passport valid for at least six months
A recent color photograph, 3 cm x 4 cm, with a red background
A return ticket or onward ticket to another country
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali are both official entry points for e-VOA holders [imigrasi.go.id].
An approved e-VOA does not guarantee admission. The immigration officer at the arrival point makes the final decision on your entry and issues your stay permit.

What if you are not eligible for the e-VOA?
Apply for the C1 visit visa, Indonesia's single-entry tourist visa, before you travel. It is issued online, and you apply through an account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id [imigrasi.go.id].
The C1 is also suitable for travelers who want to turn the stopover into a longer trip. It allows a stay of 60 days from arrival, extendable up to 180 days in total.
Documents required for the C1, per the official page:
A passport valid for at least six months
A bank statement for the last three months showing at least USD 2,000 (or the equivalent), in your name or your sponsor's name
A recent color photograph, 3 cm x 4 cm, with a red background
Most applicants do not need a sponsor. However, stateless applicants, holders of a travel document other than a national passport, and citizens of certain listed countries do. Nationals of countries on the official Calling Visa list must follow a separate process [imigrasi.go.id].

How do you check your Indonesia visa eligibility before you book?
Check the following against the Directorate General of Immigration's official pages:
Nationality: find your country on the e-VOA eligibility list [evisa.imigrasi.go.id]. The immigration website also publishes the Visa on Arrival, visa-free and Calling Visa lists [imigrasi.go.id]. Citizens of countries on the visa-free list may not need a visa to enter.
Travel document: for the B1, emergency or temporary passports must be valid for 12 months, while certain travel documents are not accepted. Emergency and temporary passports are short-validity travel documents used instead of a regular national passport. A government may issue one, for example, when a passport has been lost, stolen or damaged and the holder must travel urgently.
Permitted activities: neither visa allows paid work. The B1 and C1 pages prohibit selling goods or services and receiving pay from individuals or companies in Indonesia.
If your situation does not fit neatly, read the official page for your visa. This is the guidance used by immigration authorities.

According to SPUN Global's visa pages, processing takes 1 to 3 working days for the e-VOA and 10 to 14 working days for the C1. The C1 page also states that the C1 is not available for citizens of Sri Lanka, Palestine, Sudan and Bangladesh.
If you prefer to apply independently, SPUN Global's Approval Insight can review your documents against current requirements and provides a report with recommendations in under 10 minutes. The service costs a flat fee of IDR 99,000 per visa as of October 13, 2026. Expert Insight offers additional step-by-step guidance and a dedicated chat with a visa expert.
A document review can help reduce the risk of rejection by identifying missing or inconsistent information before submission. However, the final approval decision rests with the relevant Indonesian authorities.
Whether you apply directly or use a visa service, you remain responsible for complying with the visa's validity, permitted length of stay, and conditions. Before you apply, you can contact SPUN Global to check your eligibility for the visa you need.
